Gulfstream Aerospace

Gulfstream's story begins in 1958, when Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corporation launched the Gulfstream I — a twin-turboprop aircraft designed to move American corporate executives faster than the airlines of the era. The aircraft's success led Grumman to relocate its civilian aircraft operations to a purpose-built plant in Savannah, Georgia, which opened in 1967 and remains Gulfstream's headquarters today.

The jet-powered Gulfstream II followed in the late 1960s, establishing the swept-wing, T-tail silhouette that would define the brand for decades. Through the Gulfstream III, IV, and V of the 1980s and 1990s, the company built its reputation on range, cabin comfort, and reliability — the GV, in particular, set the template for the modern ultra-long-range category.

In 1999, General Dynamics Corporation acquired Gulfstream Aerospace for $5.3 billion, and it has operated as a General Dynamics subsidiary ever since — giving the manufacturer access to the parent company's deep aerospace and defense engineering base while retaining its own brand and Savannah leadership team.

The 2010s and 2020s brought a full clean-sheet renewal: the fly-by-wire G500 and G600 arrived in 2018, followed by the flagship G700 (certified and entering service in 2024) and the ultra-long-range G800 (certified April 2025, delivering since September 2025 as the longest-range business jet in the world at 8,200 nm). The super-mid-size G400 is the newest program in flight testing, having completed its first flight in August 2024. Since 1958, Gulfstream has delivered more than 2,000 aircraft and today employs over 20,000 people worldwide, roughly two-thirds of them in the Savannah area — making Gulfstream both Savannah's largest private employer and Georgia's largest manufacturer.

Gulfstream competes most directly with Bombardier's Global family (Global 5500 through the incoming Global 8000) and Dassault's Falcon line (Falcon 6X and the flagship Falcon 10X) in the large-cabin and ultra-long-range segments. At the top of the market, the G800's 8,200 nm range currently makes it the longest-range purpose-built business jet in service, ahead of Bombardier's Global 8000 (targeting 8,000 nm, not yet certified) and Dassault's Falcon 10X (targeting roughly 7,500 nm, also pre-certification).

In the super-mid-size and mid-size categories, Gulfstream's G280 and forthcoming G400 compete with Bombardier's Challenger 3500, Dassault's Falcon 2000LXS, and Embraer's Praetor family — segments where cabin altitude, runway performance, and operating cost matter as much as headline range.
